Do you recommend that I trade in my Saturn at the dealership?

I own a ’98 Saturn SL-2. It’s been having problems with increasing frequency in the past couple of years and has 107,000 miles on it. At the moment, it runs but could use $1,200 in repairs to fix everything the mechanic found, including timing chain and sprockets replacement (required soon, ~$500 min).

I would be willing to go with a used car as well. I have a pretty good income, and don’t like spending lots of time maintaining a car. Should I trade the car in at the Saturn dealership and get a new Saturn, or would other dealers offer me just as good a deal for trading in?

First off… your mechanic is feeding you a line of bull if the car is running and “needs” a timing chain and sprockets. At 107,000 miles I would seriously doubt that.

After you get a second opinion and still think you need to get rid of it, consider this. If you live in a state where you only have to pay sales tax on the difference between your trade and the car your buying, trading the Saturn in would be worth a look. Unfortunately, because GM has plummeted its owners’ resale values by offering huge incentives on everything for years, you’ll probably be disappointed.

So you now realize why people buy Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas, and you’ll probably be going to one of those dealers. It’s time to raise your “car IQ” and see the light. See what they’ll give you and insist that that price be a separate transaction (ie: don’t let them play games with the car price vs. trade in. Just understand that the Asian makes don’t have to discount their cars right off the bat because they’re selling well (mainly because it’s VERY rare for one of these makes to need anything before 107,000!).

If they aren’t giving you what you want tell the salesman you’ll need time to sell it yourself. They hate to hear that because they don’t want you to get away and have other options.

Be sure to look for any 2006 demos on the lot, and understand that models without sunroofs, odd colors and with few options are easier to deal on than loaded ones.
