A salvage car is generally one that can not profitably be repaired and resold. Also commonly called a junk car, millions of vehicles leave America’s roadways every year, and are dealt with in a surprisingly diverse number of ways.

Most salvage cars are broken apart and end up in two places; the steel ends up being sold to a metal recycling plant, and the rest ends up in a landfill. While not the most environmentally responsible tactic, it is the cheapest way to deal with salvage cars.

More commonly, junk yards will buy cars that may have valuable used parts and let potential buyers search their yards and remove the parts themselves.
