new or old transmission?

I drive a 1997 GMC suburban has 106,600+ miles on it and this is the only vehicle i have , cant afford a new one.. transmission broke last tuesday..my mechanic says to put a new one in for $2300, this other mechanic might be able to put a refurbished one for about $1000. so anyone out there who can give me some answers for this qustion would be great!
The first mechanic says ne dont believe in refurbished because the break down in 2-3 months…and a lot of my friends says its ok.
I have 3 children and we have a lot of activities that I drive them too..so I really need an affordalbe but reliable one.
Help please!!! rental cars cost too much!

go with what you can afford. rebuilt transmissions are very reliable so dont listen to everything you hear. you can get very good warranties on rebuilt transmissions from Jasper and others. prices will change depending on the length of the warranty and companies. shop around. you can even get very reliable transmissions out of junk yards and save several hundred $’s…………………..
