Is the tint law in California enforced?

I have lived in Georgia and Arizona where the tint law on cars is 30% (that means only 30% of light can come in, so 5% is the darkest). In both locations people everywhere have windows a lot darker than 30%. I have only known one person in Georgia who has gotten a ticket for tinted windows, but that was because they were driving around a sketchy part of Atlanta where there was a lot of crime. I looked up that California’s tint law is 70%. That is nothing! Has anyone ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for window tint in CA, LA area specifically?

The short answer to your question is yes. You have to remember that California is a huge state and there are hundreds of agencies and thousands of police officers. Each officer has his or her own violations they look out for. A dark tint job is a favorite for many because it is an officer safety issue.

The law is California Vehicle Code 26708. It applies to the drivers and passengers window. Here’s what it says:

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.

So the factory glazing on the window and the applied material must together have a visible light transmittance (VLT) of at least 70%.

You are also required to have within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of the law.

The fine, if the officer checks “Correctable” on the citation is $25. You must also have it removed and get the citation signed off by another officer. However, if the officer believes that it is “persistent neglect” or you don’t agree to have it corrected, the fine would be $173.
