Need a good vehicle for driving 1200 kms each way to the desert and back?

What type of car should we be looking at? We have a Toyota Rav4 but I feel it is too small for this type of drive especially if we hit a kangaroo. Would a sedan do the trip or should we be looking at a big 4WD? Keep in mind that we are in Australia so our options wont be the same as in the USA, we could choose a Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and I’m not sure what else. But no Dodges or anything because they dont sell them here.
Yes they do have subarus but I think they are outta my price range I’ll look into it though, thanks for your advice !!

They specifically test vehicles for animal impacts. (Sure, a kangaroo isn’t exactly like a moose, but it’ll still hit the car similarly)

That’s not to say other cars won’t stand up to it (Subaru, in particular, is known for having very rugged A-pillars), but others don’t make a point of testing for it.

Also, your Rav-4 would be fine. Unless you’re looking to go off road the whole way, a Landcruiser or Patrol would be overkill. There are plenty of sedans and car-based SUVs (like your Rav-4) that can take constant abuse on unpaved roads.

Just remember to pack tools (pare down you tool kit to just what wrenches and sockets you need for your car. Chances are there are only 4 or 5 sizes of socket you need. Bring a ratchet to fit those sockets, a couple of extensions, an adjustable wrench, vice-grips, a multitool, and a breaker bar, if you have a belt tensioner that requires one to remove the belt. That should be all you need in tools.), extra coolant, extra belts, and lots and lots of water. Also a roll of electrical tape, and a roll of duct tape. And maybe some flexible or fitted coolant hoses and hose clamps, too. Better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Also, keep your eye on your temperature gauge, and don’t run max AC if you’re worried about over-stressing your engine.

If your tires are old, replace them. Make sure your spare tire is good. Screw-type jacks work, but aren’t terribly safe on soft or uneven surfaces. I’d suggest bringing a solid, wide board to put it on (2 by 6 or 2 by 8, maybe a foot long) in case you have to jack your car up on the dirt.

Again…better to have it and not need it.

Oh, and those roo-bars I hear about seem like a great idea. See if there’s one made for your Rav-4.
