Car shopping: Can these cars handle 500lbs of cargo?
I’m car shopping. Each day, I’ll be transporting about 500 lbs of weights (dumbbells etc) and loading and unloading them for work.
Can the following vehicles regularly handle such a payload in their cargo area or are they really best for just transporting passengers?
Scion xB (newest generation)
Honda Element
Toyota Matrix
Mazda3 Hatchback
Toyota RAV4
Ford Escape
If not, what would you recommend? I’ve focused on compact SUVs, Crossovers and hatchbacks because this would also be my daily driver. But I’m not opposed to getting a small truck if I can easily load and remove the cargo and keep it out of the weather. I’ve also looked at small cargo vans, but I guess I don’t like the idea of having a cargo van as a daily driver. Basically, I need help finding a vehicle that can:
1) handle that kind of cargo
2) get decent mpg (18+ city)
3) is fairly affordable and reliable

Ford Escape. We have an 01 Escape, v6 all wheel drive.
We have had at least 400 pounds of dog food in the cargo area ( behind second row seat) and you could not tell it was there. Still drove nice, handled nice, no rear end sag.
And the wife gets 20 mpg+ in town
