Is Panorama City a bad area to live in?

I don’t have a car, and I’m considering renting a cheap room in Panorama City, at my friend’s house. I’ve heard gun shots and lots of sirens and helicopters the times I’ve visited here.

In general yes, it has a bad reputation. It is not entirely bad, there are clean residential streets with well kept lawns and clean sidewalks. It’s a working class Latino area for the most part. There are sections that are heavily infested with gangs and where there have been LAPD blockades. The part close to Kaiser Permanente hospital seems to be a bit safer, but stay away from Blythe street, and stay away from the sector between Nordhoff and Roscoe west of Van Nuys Blvd where many low income apartments are and where gangs are prevalent. Basically anywhere adjacent to the Panorama Mall is crappy and the further from Van Nuys blvd, the better.
