For a pharmacuetecal sales rep, do doctors already know the new drugs or are you really selling to them?

I am looking for a new job, and I just don’t get the idea of pharmacuetecal sales. I do not want to insult anyone here but how does a sales rep actually sell a drug without having a medical degree. Are they hard sales calls, are doctors giving you the “I’m high and mighty and you’re part of the problem” speech. It really does baffle me as to how someone who is selling the product–drugs–to highly educated people actually does it. Is there training on the particular drug. Do doctors rely on you for knowledge or just extra pens and samples. I’m not trying to be facetious here, I just can’t get past the fact that you are not a doctor, selling to doctors. I know little about cars and would find it hard to sell anything related to cars to mechanics. Anything besides insults and patronization will help.

A medical representative needs to have Bachelor of Science (B.Sc/B.S) qualification mimimum. M.Sc or MS can also qualify for this job. A medical representative works for a pharma company. He takes up the job to meet the doctors and make them aware of the company products.

HE DOESNT SELL ANY MEDICINE TO THE DOCTOR

As this is a marketing profession the only goal of the representative is to acheive maximum sales. Now I wrote that a sales representative doest sells any medicine then how he contribute to actual selling. Here is the key.

The sales agents conveince the doctor about the dosage and suitability of the products and its benefits as compared to the same product of other competitor companies. Based on this the doctor prescribes the medicine to the patient. This prescription when goes to the medical shop, the medicine is sold. This is how the turn over of company increases.

THE MORE THE NETWORK A SALES PERSON CREATES MORE THE REVENUE IS GENERATIED.

However the doctors are not fool, to listen to non medico sales agent and follow their guidelines. Doctors are well known with the treatment schedules and mode of action of the medicines. However in some cases a good research from pharma comany brings new comibation of medicines in the market, which a doctor might have been looking since a long for some kind of treatment. Such kind of information when is disseminated to the doctor by a sales represenatitive, the doctor and the patient commubity is really benefited.

This is what the ideal scence should be to look at this profession. But the story is not so simple. This is a very cruel and dirty business. The sales agents offers doctors gifts and other aminitis and make them to prescribe the company medicine to the patients which is not ethical..

If might not know, but a doctor is supposed to prescribe the generic name of a medicine not its trade name. Let me clear this.

Ceftizimide is a third generation antibiotic, which is manufactured by a number of pharma companies. A doctor well knows abou t this drug. This medicine is marketed under various trade names. One of the trade name is FORTUM manufactured by GSK. Many other companies manufacture the same drug and market it under different trade names say CEFTA, FORTAMAN etc. Here the doctor is supposed to prescribe only as CEFTIXZDIME and NOT ad FORTUM.

Now the medical representative undergoes training programs administerd by his employer company and teaches him the know hows of the drugs he has to market. Thus he speaks only as a parrot in front of the doctor nothing knowing much about it.

So even he dont have a medical ground he does the job nicely. Secondly in most of the cases it is not the knowledge of the medical representative that impresses the doctor but are the gifts offered by him which entices the doctors to prescribe a medicine.
