What was right? (road rage)?

So it was bumper to bumper traffic on the LIE in NYC, like any other regular day. And I was behind this guy who had at least two car lengths in front of him, and taking pictures of traffic like a d-bag. I was sort of tailing him, but it was traffic so i had the right to so that other ppl won’t merge in front of me and take my spot… he see’s that i’m tailing him, and slams on his brake to brake check me… i honk and he flips me off… i continue tailing him, until he fully stops in traffic and proceeds to slowly back in to me, i honk… he flips me off and i exit the highway… who’s correct in this instinct? i know i shouldn’t have honked… but am i right in tailing him, i mean this traffic is supposed to be bumper to bumper isn’t it?

No. traffic is never supposed to be bumper to bumper. By tailing him, you are leaving yourself open to rear ending him, if he needed to slam on his brakes for a real reason. You should always leave at least a car length between you and any other car. The rule of thumb is that there should be at least a second between you and the car in front of you, for every ten miles an hour you are traveling.

It is also a signal from the driver in front of you, to hit their brakes to flash their brake lights. That is their way of saying “back off” and letting you know you are too close. You are supposed to back off at that point. He had every right to leave space between himself and the car in front of him.

You need to relax. The only car you can control on the road is your own. You can’t make any other car do anything you want it to do. So chill out, and drive safely.
